Let’s pull together to donate socks before winter

The City of Cape Town’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, is calling on Capetonians and City staff to join him in the drive to collect socks for the less fortunate before winter. This initiative is in partnership with the Bergvliet Lions Club, a member of Lions Clubs International, which is a network of volunteers who work together to answer community needs.
The initiative is in support of the club’s Sock-A-Thon event that will take place on Human Rights Day on 21 March 2022, where the club will distribute the collected socks to various charities across Cape Town.
Thus far, the club has collected approximately 15 000 pairs of socks.
‘When asked to join this initiative, I accepted without hesitation as it resonates with the city we are creating, namely a caring city that builds integrated communities by working with organisations like the Bergvliet Lions Club. This is also about encouraging mindfulness by making a small donation that will have a big impact on the recipients. Thus, I am calling on all Capetonians, City employees and other City Councillors to join me in making this worthy cause a success. The club is also attempting a World Record with the longest line of socks in the world. Together we can help them reach this goal,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
‘Cape Town is a colourful and diverse city and a pair of socks can help brighten someone’s day and keep them warm on a cold night. With winter around the corner, a pair of socks will be the perfect gift to those in need. We cannot do everything, but every one of us can do something to make our city a more pleasant, caring, and welcoming place to live in. Kindness does not only enrich the recipient, but it also improves the well-being of the giver. This is one way we can give hope and make a meaningful contribution,’ said Alderman Andrews.
The socks can be dropped off at the following venues:
outside the Deputy Mayor’s office on 6th Floor, Podium Block
the Security Desk on the Second Floor at the Cape Town Civic Centre
Subcouncil 20, Alphen Centre, M41, Constantia.
